ANGRA DOS REIS (BRAZIL)
Angra dos Reis is located around 93 miles south west of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s famous for its coastline especially the Bay of Ilha Grande. This area is one of the best cruising grounds in South America with more than 365 islands, one for each day of the year. There are plenty of sheltered anchorages and spectacular white sandy beaches. Many affluent people from Rio and Sao Paolo visit Angra dos Reis, some of them also keep boats here on a permanent basis. The area is easy to navigate especially during January when the winds are light.
Angra dos Reis is a lively fishing harbour which sports two marinas as well as a number of private docks. The main village is called Vila do Abraao which is located on the Ilha Grande. Here there are lively bars, restaurants, St Sebastian Church and a trail leading to the ruins of the Candido Mendes prison. This place is a sheer paradise for those visitors who like a bit of adventure. It’s filled with waterfalls, plains, mountains, coves and winding paths.

There are also many shipwrecks around which are perfect for scuba divers or snorkellers to explore. Whether you’re looking for a deserted beach or a beach with activities and water sports, you’re spoilt for choice on an Angra dos Reis yacht charter. Head for Tangua Beach, Frade Beach or Itanhanga Island for a relaxing day in the sun.
For superyacht charterers who enjoy learning about history here, check out the 18th and 19th century monuments and lots of interesting architecture. Take a cultural tour to learn more about Angra dos Reis. The Town Hall which was abandoned in 1920 and restored ten years later is now the headquarters for the local government. There’s also a legend that if anyone takes a drink from the Chacarada da Carioca Fountain, they will never be able to leave this beautiful city.
The city is also known for the Aquidaba Shipwreck Monument which was built in honour of the Admiralty. It’s a granite obelisk marking one of the largest shipwrecks of the Brazilian Navy in 1906 and houses the remains of the crew. With its beaches, waterfalls and places of interest, don’t forget to put Angra dos Reis on your charter yacht itinerary.
