Only Pitcairn Island, the second largest, is inhabited. Located halfway between New Zealand and Peru, approximately 2170km east south-east of Tahiti, 5310km from Auckland, New Zealand and just over 6600km from Panama.  Only about 3.2km (2 miles) long and 1.6km (1 mile) wide, remote Pitcairn Island has a lush, fertile climate and colourful history.  History In 1790 Fletcher Christian led a mutiny on the English vessel, HMAV Bounty and, together with 8 fellow mutineers and 19 Polynesians, sailed the ship to Pitcairn Island, one of the most remote and isolated islands in the world. By 1808, when Pitcairn was rediscovered, all but one of the mutineers, John Adams, were dead. Eleven Polynesian women and 25 children remained.  Today you can share this living history and culture, as almost all of the 60 or so people living on Pitcairn are direct descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Polynesian consorts. Beyond this extraordinary history, Pitcairn is surrounded by what will soon be formally designated as the world’s largest marine reserve (324,000 sq miles or 834,000 sq km), The Pitcairn Marine Reserve offers protection to some of the most pristine waters and coral reefs on earth, where sea life abounds.  The untouched islands of the group are also home to many species of endemic flora and fauna.      Photo Copyright Andrew Randall Christian A unique destination Yachts travelling from or to Galapagos, Easter Island, French Polynesia and South America usually visit the Islands. Once on the island you will experience the islanders’ warm hospitality. You might even be lucky enough to join a community dinner, where the whole island share a meal. This tradition makes Pitcairn the only place in the world where you can dine with the whole country!  Skilled craftspeople, Pitcairn Islanders still carve home-made crafts and curios. The island’s honey is said to be amongst the purest in the world. At the Post Office you will find the famous Pitcairn Stamps and First Day Covers in limited numbers. Everywhere you go on Pitcairn Island, you will encounter fabulous views of the Pacific Ocean. Charter guests wishing to take a walk around the island will find a range of well-marked tracks or varying difficulty, that lead to many of Pitcairn's historic sites.  We recommend you arrange a local guide to take you on a walking tour or by four-wheel drive Quad Bike. Pitcairn Island - Photo credit RSPB The island's Museum, built in 2004, is situated a short walk from the public square in Adamstown. Here you will discover the local artifacts dating back to ancient Polynesian culture. There is also the Bounty Cannon, Bible and other naval artifacts and memorabilia from the days of Pitcairn's early settlement. A visit to Pitcairn is a truly unforgettable experience.  Accessible only by sea, it is the rugged beauty of the island, together with its friendly, hospitable and resilient people that make Pitcairn one of the world’s best kept secrets. Being able to visit the Pitcairn Islands aboard a superyacht at least once in a lifetime is a truly amazing experience reserved only to a few. Should you be interested in knowing more about the possibility of chartering a yacht that includes a visit to the islands, please don't hesitate to contact our professional charter brokers.
