THE AEOLIAN ISLANDS The Aeolian Islands are one the Mediterranean’s natural wonders, and best seen as sea. This breath-taking archipelago lies 20-50 miles off the north-east coast of Italy and consists of seven volcanic islands. Although there is talk of the volcanoes being so bright in ancient times that they were utilised by ancient seafarers for navigation – think the classic Greek writing of Virgil’s Aeneid for example – their glow is just as bright now and just as interesting in modern times. With its many intriguing inlets around the island and jutting rocks offshore, Panarea is a perfect place to drop anchor from your charter yacht. Why not rent a small boat to get out into the ocean? One of the quirkiest things on this island is there are no cars, only electric carts and Vespa scooters can be used here. Salina provides the perfect hideaway as many of the islanders emigrated to Australia or the US. Some people do return in the summer to work in bars and restaurants. The remote Aeolian Islands have magnificent clear blue waters surrounding them so scuba diving here is very popular. If you’re searching for beautiful swimming spots, the Aeolian Islands deliver. Canneto and Acquacalda in Lipari are both Blue-Flag making them safe for swimmers. Why not spend a day in Lipari town? It’s full of history and has some very good restaurants. Visit a museum before having lunch then an afternoon siesta. From Lipari go to Panarea, a party island which is a mix of green slopes, rocky hills and beautiful architecture.  Nearby Stromboli is supposed to have been the home of Aeolus, the god of the winds, thus the name Aeolian Islands. The main attraction here is the volcano which at one time you were allowed to climb to its summit and look down at the jets of lava shooting out. As the volcano blew its top, it’s no longer possible to get up close. Another place on the Aeolian Islands is Vulcano, where you can walk to the top of the volcanic cone.  A couple of yachting conveniences can be found on the islands of Lipari, Vulcano and Salina and all are fully equipped with the facilities needed while your superyacht is at anchor. The Aeolian Islands also have several bays which are good anchoring spots. This will allow you to enjoy the magnificent evening lava light shows as they plunge into the sea. Enjoy safe anchorage from your boat as you enjoy nature at its very best. Being volcanic the Aeolian Islands are not really noted for their beaches. However, you can find a sandy beach on the island of Lipari. Near the village of Canneto is Spiaggia Bianca (the White Beach). It’s very popular with superyacht charter visitors as well as the locals. Stromboli has beaches around Ficogrand and Piscita. There’s also a black sandy beach at Geliso on the island of Vulcano. The quietest beaches can be found on remote Alicudi and Filicui. Island hopping is the best way to go from beach to beach as part of your superyacht itinerary.
