The Giraglia Rolex Cup. Renowned. Respected. Prestigious. Historic. The ‘Fastnet of the Mediterranean’ is back for a 59th year as Corinthian sailing talent from around the world compete for one of the most illustrious and sought-after prizes in the sport. Given the prospective talent on show and enthralling encounters experienced in recent years, the 2011 edition promises to be another rich fixture in the sailing calendar.
Wally Yachts and the Financial Times have joined forces to launch a new Maxi Yacht racing series. The FT Wally Grand Prix Series is a unique series of races for the world’s largest fleet of Maxi racing yachts. The racing teams feature sailing’s premier talent from the America’s Cup and the Olympics together with some of the most prominent captains of industry. The series takes place between April and October, moving between the Mediterranean’s most glamorous and vibrant sailing locations.
Ed Kastelein is proud and pleased to announce that his Atlantic yacht has been selected as finalist for the 2011 World Superyacht Awards. An impressive 100 superyachts were nominated for an award and from all these exceptional yachts the sailing yacht Atlantic emerged as one of the finalists in the category “Best Sailing Yacht in 45m+ size range”. The 56.39m (185′) classic yacht Atlantic will be in the dry-dock for a fresh coat of Antifouling in April and then she will head off to sail her first full season.
Les Voiles de Saint Tropez 2010 bowed out this Sunday with the traditional prize-giving at the citadel, before setting a date for next year and an anniversary edition. The 30th anniversary of the original Nioulargue regatta – initially named the Club 55 Cup – will be celebrated from 24th September to 2nd October 2011.
The 2010 edition of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez concluded with the prizegiving at La Citadelle, the 16th century fortress set imposingly overlooking the white-capped Golfe de Saint-Tropez. More than 1000 competitors and supporters gathered as Andre Beaufils, President of the Les Voiles Organizing Committee presented awards with other dignitaries from Saint-Tropez and event sponsors.
Leading their classes in the Tradition division going into today’s final race – and tied for the Rolex Trophy – were Graham Walker’s NYYC 40 Rowdy in the Epoque (Classic) Marconi 1, and Yves-Marie Morault’s 12 metre, Ikra in Grands Classiques.
Though generous earlier in the day for the Modern class with about 6-8 knots, the wind was not cooperative by midday for the first start and the first race of the week for the Tradition class yachts, dropping to 2-3 knots on the Golfe de St Tropez.
By sunset, which left the sea off San Remo in a smooth golden light, only 8 boats had crossed the finish line on the second day of the Giraglia Rolex Cup offshore race.
