Since its establishment in 1835, the prestigious Royal Malta Yacht Club hosted the largest ever gathering last night – the Rolex Middle Sea Race Crew Party. More than 1500 members, competitors as well as guests enjoyed a generous party, comprising canapés, an American grill and complimentary bar. This record event looks to be accompanied by a record fleet for the competition; more than 80 yachts have now registered beating the record of 78 yachts that participated in 2008.

Godwin Zammit, Commodore of The Royal Malta Yacht Club spoke after the party. “It was great to see such a variety of people all having a good time at the Club and not just the competitors, club members and friends from the Maltese community as well. The design of the club really lends itself to a large party, as there are open areas on several levels allowing the crowd to spread out giving a quieter area or a busy dance floor, whatever you prefer.

Looking forward to the race, we have 89 yachts entered and 82 of them have registered, which is a record number. I think that the race has proved so popular because we have seen a really big interest from Easter Europe this year. We have been getting more and more Russian entries and we must thank the Russian Sailing Federation for actively promoting the race, including putting up a trophy. We have also received far more entries from Italy in recent years, so it seems to be catching on; more and more people want to come and do the Rolex Middle Sea Race again and again. For overseas visitors, many of them are coming here from colder countries, so the weather in Malta is very attractive, as well.”
