French superyacht designer Mathis Ruhl has unveiled a sailing trimaran concept, named the Wind Motion 70T. A project about ‘efficiency and self-sufficiency’, the 70m/230ft luxury trimaran uses wind as the main source of propulsion in medium conditions and has a noteworthy rig system designed for efficient performance with the traditional grace associated with sailing yachts.

During the design phase, the rigs needed to work both upwind and downwind as well as full automation, safe manoeuvrability and the ability to release in an emergency.

To attain the desired result the rigs were an evolution of a previous design, known as the MRTW, which was built for a larger vessel. The latest rig concept, the RTW² utilises a central pivot with a larger wingmast and a foldable articulated thick sail. This will allow for greater stability and reduced movement while moored and in strong wind conditions.

Other design features include an interior helm station on the upper deck and sunbathing space on the main deck aft and foredeck, while the arching superstructure creates a large contemporary interior with a more natural curved ceiling for a relaxing ambiance.
