Brooklin Boat Yard successfully christened the lovely 70-foot sailing yacht SONNY in September 2013. Luxury yacht SONNY represents another rendition of an earlier Brooklin Boat Yard built boat. In 2000, the yard launched the Dieter Empacher-designed 70’ Center Cockpit Racing / Cruising Sloop SONNY and she was actively used year round by her owner, participating in major offshore races, along with cruising back and forth between the popular yacht charter destinations – New England and the Caribbean.

Designed for performance and cruising comfort, luxury yacht SONNY is a custom cold-molded yacht that marries traditional finishes with modern structures. Her contemporary hull profile is low and sleek, ending in a stylishly raked transom that incorporates a hydraulically operated, hidden swim platform. The flush deck and low cabin trunk are reminiscent of classic racing yachts in which the foredeck is cleared for sail handling. The keel, designed with maximum lift-to-drag ratio, features winglets for greater stability without sacrificing motion comfort. The winglets run almost the full length of the keel and end in sharp corners, which help reduce leeway.
SONNY yacht’s interior is elegant in the Herreshoff finish — white and cream paintwork offset with American cherry joinery and a teak and maple cabin sole. The bright finish of the cold-molded hull peeks out in numerous places as a pleasant reminder that this is indeed a wooden boat.
Luxury yacht SONNY is ready for cruising with a spacious owner’s stateroom aft plus two double guest staterooms and a captain’s cabin forward. There are three heads and three showers aboard this mini mega-yacht. SONNY sports a carbon fiber mast by GMT and a hydraulic roller furling headsail by Harken.
SONNY yacht easily makes over nine knots on the wind, and 12 to 15 knots off the wind. She’s a true racer/cruiser built to last lifetimes by Brooklin Boat Yard.
