Sailors of all stripes, from near and far, are making plans to congregate on the blue waters of the Caribbean for the 31st edition of the largest, best, most unique sailing event in the islands: the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. The traditional kick-off to the racing season, including the Gill Commodores Cup—the one-day match racing series prior to the three-day St. Maarten Heineken Regatta—is scheduled for March 3-6.
The HSBC Premier Coastal Classic – one of the world’s iconic yacht races and one of the biggest races in the Southern Hemisphere – will start this Friday 22 October 2010 at 10am from Devonport Wharf in Auckland.
Around 200 boats, racing in eight divisions, will undertake a point to point sprint up the coast to Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands.
The VELUX 5 OCEANS has announced the dates of the starts of the five ocean sprints in the 2010/11 edition of the race. The race will start and end in the French port of La Rochelle France, in between visiting Cape Town in South Africa, Wellington in New Zealand, Salvador in Brazil and Charleston in the USA.

Fresh from her latest transatlantic record attempt, her crew are working hard to ensure that ICAP Leopard is in the best possible shape to take on Saturday’s classic 55 mile sprint around the Isle of Wight.
Strong winds and Sardinian sunshine made for an exhilarating start to the yacht racing Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in Porto Cervo Italy today. The race committee set a 30 nautical mile course in the south-easterly breeze, which was blowing 18-20 knots at the start. The wind gusted up to 35 knots later in the race as it funnelled through the straits which divide the rugged islands of Caprera and La Maddalena from the Sardinian mainland. Today, no one needed to ask why sailors call these straits ‘Bomb Alley’.
BMW ORACLE Racing, the American winners of the 33rd America’s Cup, will bring the oldest trophy in international sport to Newport, Rhode Island, on Thursday, July 1, 2010. The iconic trophy will be on show at open-to-the-public events.
Rhode Island, host to 12 of the 33 America’s Cup regattas from 1930 to 1983, and home to the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, will welcome the trophy and team representatives at a day of events celebrating both the heritage and future of the America’s Cup.
The overall winning yacht of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2010 will be named on the perpetual Silver Cup which is displayed in the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The owner of the vessel will be presented with a unique hand blown glass sculpture by Chihuly (pictured left) made especially for the event reflecting the colours of the Sardinian waters.
There was spectacular racing today for all classes on windward leeward courses in the strait between Capri and Punta Campanella. The majestic island of Capri acted as a perfect back drop but also created some tactical nuances requiring forward thinking and high precision sailing.
