Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: Big Seas and Breeze Continue to take a toll

The attrition continues in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race – throughout the night and into this morning, an additional 6 yachts retired with a grocery list of problems: damaged steering, torn mainsails, broken booms and engine issues. This time, the retirements were among the small to mid-sized boats, bringing to 16 the total number to have retired with 71 boats still battling hard in the race.

The forecast gale-force conditions made good today for the bulk of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race fleet with yachts experiencing 40-50 knots of gale to storm-force winds from the west-southwest — together with massive seas. Bob Oatley’s 100ft supermaxi Wild Oats XI, with Mark Richards at the helm, has smashed the Cabbage Tree Island Race record, finishing the 180 nautical mile race at 10:13:35am, slicing more than two hours off the time set by Stephen Ainsworth’s RP63 Loki in the race last year.

Audi Hamilton Island Race Week to start tomorrow, Friday 20th August 2010 and will finish on Saturday 28th August 2010. The supermaxi sailing yacht Wild Oats XI has taken line honours in the Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race. It was Wild Oats XI’s first attempt at the 384 nautical mile race coastal race and is also the 25th anniversary of the event.

The Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race starts at 1pm on Saturday 31 July with Weather forecast predicting record breaking race for Bob Oatley’s 100ft super maxi Wild Oats XI, who is the clear line honours favourite. The 11 year old race record of 27hrs, 35 mins and 43 seconds is currently held by sailing yacht Brindabella, set in 1999.
