Winthrop Williams Aldrich’s spirit will be forever present aboard Rhode Island’s Education at Sea tall ship, SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, through his daughter Lucy Aldrich Burr’s (Mystic, Conn.) generous donation of $15,000 to the non-profit Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island’s (OHPRI) mission to bring experiential learning to students of all ages.
Going above and beyond standard regulations to accommodate students with physical disabilities, Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island (OHPRI) has appointed Robie Pierce (Newport, R.I.) the Accessibility Director for Rhode Island’s Education at Sea school ship SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. Pierce, who is well known for his activism within the community of sailors with physical disabilities, will be a consultant during the construction of the ship, which is currently undergoing hull modifications at Promet Marine Services in Providence.
Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island (OHPRI), the non-profit organization building Rhode Island’s Education at Sea school ship SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, has received a Shipbuilding Syndicate level pledge of $250,000 from the family and friends of Lieutenant Charles John Weschler, USN, to name the ship’s Great Cabin in his honor.
Rhode Island students will participate in experiential education aboard the Education at Sea school ship SSV Oliver Hazard Perry when completed in 2013. Deborah Gist, R.I. Commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, put her stamp of approval on the project being developed through the non-profit organization Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island (OHPRI).
