The Giraglia Rolex Cup. Renowned. Respected. Prestigious. Historic. The ‘Fastnet of the Mediterranean’ is back for a 59th year as Corinthian sailing talent from around the world compete for one of the most illustrious and sought-after prizes in the sport. Given the prospective talent on show and enthralling encounters experienced in recent years, the 2011 edition promises to be another rich fixture in the sailing calendar.
By sunset, which left the sea off San Remo in a smooth golden light, only 8 boats had crossed the finish line on the second day of the Giraglia Rolex Cup offshore race.
At 11h05m09s CEST Igor Simcic’s Maxi Esimit Europa 2 sailing yacht crossed the finish line of the 2010 Giraglia Rolex Cup race, to take line honours in the 58th edition of the 241 nautical-mile race from St. Tropez to San Remo. Supermaxi Esimit Europa 2 completed the course in just 23 hours 09 seconds, 5 hours 6 seconds outside the course record.
The second day of inshore racing the Giraglia Rolex Cup dawned with more promise than the first.There is a varied international fleet gathering for the offshore element of the Giraglia Rolex Cup, the 241 nm race that this year heads to San Remo via La Giraglia, a rocky outcrop off the northern tip of Corsica. Yachts and crews have come from most corners of the world and each morning the race village resembles the United Nations with a cornucopia of languages on offer.
The Yacht Club Italiano’s legendary committee boat, the Beppe Croce, had barely set the finish line when Esimit Europa 2 crossed over to take line honours in the first inshore race of the Giraglia Rolex Cup 2010.
