The complete list of nominees for the upcoming Asia Boating Awards 2011 has now been released, with some impressive surprises and the return of some industry stalwarts. The Asia Boating Awards, now in its seventh year, is the region’s most established and respected event of its kind. This year sees awards in 23 categories, recognising Asian builders and international brands, as well as Asian regattas, marinas and yacht designers working in Asia. The pioneering Asia Boating Awards was the first event to recognise the efforts and successes of Asian yacht builders.
After a very successful ‘awards’ year in 2010 Bill Dixon has got 2011 off to a flying start by being named ‘Yacht Designer of the Year’ at the Asian Marine and Boating Awards 2011. Dixon, who has worked with companies in Asia for nearly thirty years, has now won prestigious awards two years running from a continent which is rapidly developing its leisure boat industry.

Chinese superyacht builder Sunbird Yachts won the contract to build a new 30m Dream Cat which will be the biggest catamaran built in China. The contract for the new build luxury 30m Dream Cat sailing yacht was closed at this month’s Hainan Rendezvous.

Following the success of the Cheoy Lee Bravo Series designed by Mike Burvenich, the next logical step was to develop a larger series of yachts based on the success of the Bravo series. Burvenich working closely with Marty Isenberg of Cheoy Lee looked at what the typical owner was looking for in the larger yacht series. From these discussions the Cheoy Lee Global Series was born. It was determined that the latest trend is for smaller more efficient yachts. The most popular size range was determined to be from 100 to 145 feet. Four initial models were developed; the Global 103, Global 118, Global 130, and Global 145.
Motor yacht Mazu, Cheoy Lee’s 5000th order since 1940’s, is currently nearing completion. Work on the steel hull and composite superstructure was done in parallel, in two different building bays at Cheoy Lee’s ‘Hin Lee’ manufacturing yard in southern China.
Azimut Yachts confirms that it will attend the 2011 edition of the Hainan International Boat Show, where it will be represented by its five official dealers at the event’s largest and most glamorous booth.
