The coastal town of Cascais will play host to the first America’s Cup World Series event, scheduled Aug. 6-14. Cascais, about 30 kilometers west of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, has hosted many world championship sailing events and now it’ll host the first event of the ACWS.
With a letter addressed to Club Canottieri Roggero di Lauria, the Golden Gate Yacth Club has accepted officially the Venezia Challenge into the 34th America’s Cup.
Plymouth, England has been unveiled as the second stop in the inaugural America’s Cup World Series (AC World Series). The event will be held September 10-18, 2011, and will feature both fleet and match racing.
The new era of America’s Cup racing has attracted 15 teams from 12 countries who will begin their quest for the Cup with 2011 America’s Cup World Series stops in Cascais, Portugal; Plymouth, England; and San Diego, California.
The giant America’s Cup-winning trimaran arrived in the Bay today aboard the freighter M.V. Star Isfjord after a 7,900-mile passage from Valencia, Spain, via the Panama Canal. The ship carrying USA 17 trimaran passed underneath the Golden Gate Bridge at 0530 PST and berthed alongside San Francisco’s Pier 80 at 0650.
America’s Cup competitors have amended the AC 72 class rule, the design rule that will govern the development of the Cup class wing-sailed catamarans for the 34th America’s Cup and the America’s Cup World Series events in 2012.
Within a month of the official announcement last September that the America’s Cup was to be raced aboard multihulls, the Peyron brothers announced that they wanted to bring French know-how together to set up a Challenge to attempt to win the prestigious trophy. That is exactly what they have now achieved.
With its technical shakedown now complete, it is handover day for the new AC45 wing-sailed catamaran, marking the beginning of the next era of the America’s Cup. America’s Cup Race Management (ACRM) will now manage the logistics, care and maintenance of the prototype as competitors test the boat over the coming weeks. The AC45 is the forerunner to the larger AC72, which will be used in the 34thAmerica’s Cup.
