Rolls-Royce has disclosed its latest superyacht concept, a 62m/203ft expedition yacht CRYSTAL BLUE that features cutting-edge technology such as remote navigation, also known as a smart dynamic positioning system typically found on commercial vessels.

The dynamic positioning system automatically controls and adjusts two ‘azimuth thrusters’, which are propellers that are able to rotate 360° around a vertical axis for increased maneuverability and performance, as well as a TT1100 bow thruster. The advantage of the system is the ability for a superyacht to maintain the same position without drifting or using an anchor.
The control centre has also been relocated below the bow and the crew are able to operate without windows from the internal bridge, which comes equipped with display screens, cameras and sensors. As a result, there is more guest space on the forward deck for a salon or more guest accommodation.
“CRYSTAL BLUE has been designed specifically to show how new technology can meet the yacht sector’s increased demand for higher performance, greater operating ranges and increased levels of guest comfort, without impacting the environment,” commented Oscar Levander, Vice President of Innovation at Rolls-Royce.
There is also a ‘safe room’ incorporated into the layout where guests and crew members can gather for protection in the event of an attack. The crew will then be able to override controls to navigate the yacht, or authorise a shore-based centre to navigate instead.
A hybrid propulsion system using LNG fuel and battery power produces cleaner emissions to pass standards for sensitive environments such as Antarctica. A support vessel called BLUE SHADOW provides a bunkering barge for the LNG fuel, allowing CRYSTAL BLUE to reach a maximum range of 4,400 nautical miles.
