The official practice race for the TP52 Series at the Marseille Trophy had to be cancelled today, falling foul of the stormy, wet conditions and the unsettled breezes. The forecast for tomorrow is more promising, when three races for the TP52 are planned with the first starts due at 13:30hrs while the five GP42’s are scheduled for their Practice Race.
The Yacht Club Italiano’s legendary committee boat, the Beppe Croce, had barely set the finish line when Esimit Europa 2 crossed over to take line honours in the first inshore race of the Giraglia Rolex Cup 2010.
It was a long wait, but the Giraglia Rolex Cup eventually got underway this afternoon at 15.28 CEST after a long wait for the wind to fill in. When it did come, the wind was piping at 20 knots, with gusts of 25 knots, and the Yacht Club Italiano/Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez race committee put on a short fast race of 9 nautical miles, which Esimit Europa 2 (EUR) had the audacity to complete in a few seconds under 40 minutes. The rest of the fleet was at sea for a little longer enjoying a brief, productive start to the inshore series. Winners today include Container (GER) in IMA, Near Miss (SUI) in IRC A, Nusantara (FRA) in IRC B and Keonda II (ITA) ORC B.
15 years ago, the Esimit Europa project symbolically connected border cities and regions and the idea that seemed utopian at the time became reality with the expansion of the European Union. Today is the time for a new dimension — a Pan-European dimension.

182 of the entered yachts have so far committed to the offshore element that, this year, will take the yachts from Saint-Tropez across the Ligurian Sea to the Giraglia rock and back to San Remo. A version of this course last raced in 1999. The Italian finish port is a mere 60 nautical miles up the coast as the crow flies from Saint-Tropez, but the trip out to the rock off the northern tip of Corsica and back will be no easy jaunt. This region favours light winds or strong winds and rarely a straightforward ride.

Five races confirmed four powerful semi-finalists today for the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena. They are the French/German boat All4One, Sweden”s Artemis, Emirates Team New Zealand and SYNERGY Russian Sailing Team.
The Rolex Middle Sea Race takes place in the heart of the Mediterranean and covers one of the most beautiful courses in the world. Unique for a race of this length in that it starts and finishes in the same place, the 607-mile route includes the deep azure waters of Sicily and the Straits of Messina, along with the islands of Pantelleria and Lampedusa.
The French/German team All4One moved up to second equal place at the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena today and will race Sweden’s top-placed Artemis tomorrow to decide the winner of the round robin.
The other match between Emirates Team New Zealand and Italy’s Mascalzone Latino, both currently second equal, will be key to resolving the other top places. Tonight, all four boats are at the top of the points table with only one point separating them.
The forecast mistral is raging at full force in La Maddalena. With gusts well over 30 knots, todays racing is cancelled.
