Volvo Ocean Race: Puma Ocean Racing to build Volvo 70 sailing yacht in Newport, RI, USA.

New England Boatworks Inc. has been contracted to build PUMA’s new Volvo 70 for the upcoming VOLVO OCEAN RACE 2011-2012. Design for this latest generation round the world race yacht will be provided by Valencia based Naval Architecture firm Juan Yacht Design.

Audi IRC Australian Championship over for another year

The Audi IRC Australian Championship, which has grown in popularity, with numbers increasing to a record 144 boats for this fourth edition, has wrapped up for another year. The Championship comprised of: Audi Victoria Week in January, Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta in March, Audi Sydney Gold Coast Race at the end of July and culminating with Audi Hamilton Island Race Week in August.

Franck Cammas’ Volvo Open 70, Groupama, was the first yacht to round Muckle Flugga at 1400 BST. They are now heading southwest at a speed of over 17 knots with their 19-mile lead rapidly increasing over their rivals Telefonica Azul, who are still beating up to Muckle Flugga.

Skipper Sidney Gavignet (FRA) onboard the trimaran sailing yacht OMAN AIR MAJAN crossed the finish line off Lizard Point, Cornwall at 09:03:55 GMT on the 24th of August 2010, to smash the single handed Round Britain and Ireland record. The A100 trimaran OMAN AIR MAJAN broke the existing record held by Thomas Coville by a massive 1 day 15 hours 30 minutes and 44 seconds.

Forecasts predict sailing yacht Oman Air Majan to finish tomorrow between 0800 – 1100 GMT off Lizard Point, Cornwall. If the record pace continues Oman Air Majan will break the existing record by over 24 hours.
