Last weekend saw  the  STP Shipyard carry out their annual fire drill, attended by STP’s workers and the firemen from Palma Fire & Rescue Service. The operation started by simulating the outbreak of a fire in one of the boats on the site, which was extinguished by STP’s fire engine.

Next the rescue as of an unconscious person with injuries in the same boat was carried out using the snorkel (a mechanically bending arm) of the Palma Fire & Rescue Service’s fire engine. The day of training brought together over 25 STP workers and a full brigade of firemen from Palma de Mallorca Fire & Rescue Service, along with personnel from the Balearic Islands Port Authority, the Civil Guard and the Harbour Police.

The fire drill is an opportunity for the shipyard workers to practise their Fire Protocol to ensure a rapid response and eliminate risk in case a real fire should break out on the yachts or the premises. Response capacity and evacuation to safe areas are the top priorities in these kinds of measures to prevent risk and raise workers’ awareness.

The shipyard has been confirmed as one of the safest and best-prepared firms in Europe by the CAEB (Confederation of Balearic Business Associations), which presented STP with a Prevention of Risks at Work award last October. With this type of operation STP Shipyard is demonstrating the importance it attaches to both safety at work and risk prevention.
